Who Gives a Crap Bamboo Toilet Paper Product Review

Bamboo toilet paper? What the…

Oh yes, such a thing really does exist.

I admit, I was instantly intrigued when I first saw the online ad for the Who Gives a Crap bamboo toilet paper. I mean, it’s not like my local stores have any options for sustainable toilet paper besides regular ol’ recycled varieties.

So the ad popped up and the name caught my eye first. Then, the colourful packaging. Then, the price: $52 USD and plus another $8 USD to ship it to Canada. I thought, okay, the world really has lost its mind. Sixty bucks American for toilet paper?

I clicked.

I found out that the $52 USD option is for their premium package: 48 double-length rolls. In the States, this makes it just over a dollar per roll, which really isn’t that much more expensive than what you pay for premium toilet paper in Canada. You know, the ones with the adorable critters on the package and sponge-like absorbency? The ones that feel like a super soft towel rather that toilet paper? Yeah, those ones. So, okay…but I live in Canada, right? And with the exchange rate, well, it adds up.

I bought it anyway. Why? Well, I was intrigued at the novelty of it, sure, but I was also sucked in by the company itself.

Reasons to love it

  • The company donates 50% of all proceeds to help build toilets in developing countries
  • Their products don’t use any inks, dyes, or scents
  • Their packaging is eco-friendly (and adorable)
  • Their social media feeds have tons of eco-friendly ideas for upcycling and crafting with the packaging and rolls.
  • No trees are cut down to make their paper products
  • They have a 100% money back guarantee

So I decided to give it a try. Now, let me just say, I personally love this toilet paper, but my partner has a different opinion. I’ll give you both sides and let you decide for yourself.

Pros of the bamboo toilet paper

AKA – Reasons I love it.

  • It’s an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative to wood pulp toilet paper.
  • Each roll is eco-packed in naturally-colourful paper. This means each roll stays dust-free and sanitary until use and adds a pop of colour to your bathroom while waiting to be used.
  • It’s a conversation starter. No one has entered my bathroom and seen these colourfully-packaged rolls without commenting.
  • The rolls really are double-length and last double the amount of time.
  • I feel good about the donation thing.
  • I feel better knowing there’s no dyes, inks, or scents.
  • I feel better knowing I’m not contributing to deforestation every time I wipe.

Cons of the bamboo toilet paper

AKA – Why my partner isn’t a huge fan

  • It’s not soft or thick
  • It’s more expensive than wood pulp toilet paper
  • It tears easily

In all fairness, he’s not wrong. This toilet paper kind of reminds me of the stuff they have in schools and offices, but it is thicker and higher quality than those. Plus, the environment!

Will we be buying again?

If I get my way, yes. I mean, it’s a simple eco-friendly and sustainable switch to make. It costs a bit extra, sure, but the payoffs, in my opinion, are well worth it. Plus, I’m saving money in other eco-friendly areas…so that’s what I call balance.
