I typically use my citrus vinegar for cleaning countertops, but this past weekend, I ran out. As I searched my cupboards for a backup jar of soaking citrus peels, I realized I was out of luck. Turns out, we haven’t purchased a lot of fresh citrus lately, but that’s besides the point.
I had to makeshift a new natural surface cleaner with whatever DIY green cleaning ingredients I had on hand. Knowing the success of my citrus vinegar recipe lies in the process of extracting the citrus oil from discarded peels, I decided to simply skip that step and use pure essential oils.
I have to say, the simplicity of this recipe won me over. The aromatherapy factor didn’t hurt either. You see, while the citrus vinegar certainly smells fresh, it doesn’t have the same scent strength when compared with pure essential oils. It tends to smell more on the vinegar-y side whereas this new recipe is just pure plant aroma.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ll definitely still make the citrus vinegar recipe because it up-cycles citrus peels in a sustainable way. However, I won’t buy ridiculously expensive or out-of-season citrus fruit simply for the recipe’s sake because, well, that’s just silly.
So here’s the solution. This is the all-natural essential oil surface cleaner recipe you can make in a matter of minutes.
- Lemongrass essential oil
- Grapefruit essential oil
- White vinegar
- 16-ounce glass spray bottle
- Measuring cup
- Label + pen
- Measure 1/2 cup of white vinegar
- Shake 10-15 drops of grapefruit essential oil into vinegar
- Add 15-20 drops of lemongrass essential oil
- Stir, adding a pinch of salt
- Funnel mix into spray bottle
- Fill the rest of the spray with water
- Secure lid and shake
- Label your spray bottle
Right after making this and shaking it up, I tried it on my kitchen and bathroom countertops. It left my entire kitchen and bathroom smelling fresh and clean, and it removed tomato sauce spills in the kitchen and toothpaste marks in the bathroom.
The lemongrass essential oil adds such an uplifting aroma that I’m going to use this same essential blend in a spring-inspired linen spray.
Other scent combos for this all-natural essential oil countertop cleaner recipe:
- Lavender & lemongrass
- Patchouli & sweet orange
- Rosemary & lemon
- Tea tree & tangerine
If you have people with sensitivities in the household, simply decrease the amount of essential oils used. If, like me, you want the whole household to know you’ve been cleaning, aim for around 25-35 drops total per 16-ounce.
